Essential Eligibility Criteria
Essential Eligibility Criteria for Participation in Science Camps of America Programs
Science Camps of America’s (SCA) essential eligibility criteria (EEC) are designed to help potential participants understand if an SCA program is the right fit for them. These criteria are not intended to be exclusionary but rather to identify the important elements of participation for consideration. SCA strives to foster an inclusive and welcoming community of peers that respects individuals and the unique strengths it brings. Participants are expected to respect others’ backgrounds, gender identities, race, and beliefsOffering scholarships and financial aid to help students from underrepresented backgrounds participate in our programs.
- Safe participation in SCA programs requires certain physical, mental, emotional, and social health abilities, and we are, therefore limited in the types of accommodations we can provide.
- SCA programs are not rehabilitative or therapeutic programs and do not specialize in serving those with special needs, including mental, emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties.
- SCA programs are not therapeutic programs and are not appropriate for youth dealing with behavioral, motivational, or rehabilitation concerns.
- We desire to partner with parents and work together to determine if the SCA program will be a positive experience and suitable for your child before their enrollment.
- As each child’s ability to participate is unique, decisions to accept a participant are made on an individual basis. As such, we request that parents contact SCA before enrolling their child if they have any concerns about the program's suitability for their child.
- Participants must be in good health, physically and emotionally, and have the ability to participate as part of a supportive community in a socially healthy way.
- Participants must have good mental, emotional, and social health and be able to function in a group setting positively and cooperatively displaying tolerance and respect for self and others.
- Participants must be able to interact responsibly in a group and work together as part of a team.
- Participants must be able and willing to follow all instructions and refrain from behaviors that pose a risk to themselves or others.
- Participants are expected to contribute to a safe learning environment, using respectful language and appropriate physical behavior.
- For overnight programs, participants should have the emotional maturity to handle the sleep-away-from-home aspects of the program, including living independently in a group setting and taking care of their own needs.
